These cells, called interstitial cells of Cajal, are distinguishable histologically from neurons and myocytes, and appear to amplify both cholinergic excitatory and nitrergic inhibitory enter to the graceful muscle of the stomach and gut. Regulated motor activity then breaks down the food into small particles and controls the output into the duodenum. The abdomen accomplishes these capabilities by coordinated smooth muscle rest and contraction of the varied gastric segments (proximal, distal, and pyloric). Smooth muscle myoelectric potentials are translated into muscular exercise, which is modulated by extrinsic and intrinsic innervation and hormones. The mechanisms by which gastric distention is translated into a neurohormonal satiety sign have only been partially elucidated. The extrinsic parasympathetic and sympathetic gastric innervation was discussed beforehand underneath Innervation. Important excitatory neurotransmitters embody acetylcholine, the tachykinins, substance P, and neurokinin A. The pylorus helps the latter process when closed, facilitating retropulsion of the stable food bolus again into the body of the abdomen for added breakdown.
